Does your child need help with English?

I am available for 1 to 1 tutoring face to face and on-line. I can help with revision, techniques, essay writing and more…

I have worked in education for more than 25 years and have a Bachelor’s degree in English and History from Exeter University. I am a writer, with a Master’s degree in Creative Writing and was a Teaching Assistant at The King’s School in Ottery St Mary, for eight years, specialising in English.

For the past seven years I have also been an English Tutor and have helped several students to achieve their potential and pass their GCSEs so that they can continue on to further education. I have helped many students, including those with SEND to progress from getting a 2 in their English Language mock to a 4 and above, enabling them to progress to college and 6th form.

I particularly enjoy teaching creative writing for the language paper. As I have worked with several GCSE classes I have an excellent understanding of all the texts studied for English Literature as well as the poetry syllabus and the English Language exams. Working with English teachers has given me an inside knowledge with regards to how to teach students to pass exams through employing the same techniques.

Parent/Carer Testimonials:

Jane started tutoring my daughter at the beginning of year 11 as she was struggling with English Language and working below the target grade for A level entry. Jane took the time to listen to my daughter and understand her weaknesses, in order to plan her tutoring programme. Jane’s friendly, relaxed demeanour and empathy for teenagers meant my daughter started to gain understanding which raised her confidence and self-belief. On exam results day there was a scream of delight at having gained a level 5! The first person she wanted to tell was Jane…what more can I say!

Jane began tutoring my son at the start of year 10 and continued right through until the end of year 11. During this time he became more confident as a result of Jane’s passion for teaching English. Without her regular input and support he would not have achieved the results that he did. Jane taught him how to revise effectively which helped with his exam stress and nerves throughout the mocks and actual exams and also reflected in the rest of his exams.

My grandson was struggling with both his English Literature and Language exams. Jane taught him an effective way to approach the tasks and be an active reader when analysing texts. He was taking too long and trying to put too much information in. jane taught him to be more concise and as a result of this, he passed both is English exams and progressed to college. He then went to university and has just been awarded a First!

  1. Jane tutored me through year 10 and 11 of school and helped me a lot going into more depth than the school teachers and explained everything perfectly which allowed me to understand and be more confident within the subject. I was also taught the correct way to revise and do work by myself, I am very thankful for how she helped me and got me through my exams
